SIDEWINDER

Development story

Tony Dunge, while coaching at Tampa, started to use a concept of recording practice sessions using an elevated camera behind the QB. They use a volleyball ladder stand. After arriving in Indianapolis, Coach Dunge continued to use this concept to capture video of Peyton Manning's QB drills. Coach Cutcliff from Tennessee came to visit Peyton and Marty Heckscher, Video Coordinator, at the Colts and saw this new video perspective being used. Coach "Cut" returned to UT and Joe Harrington, Video Coordinator, started to use this same principle to record all types of drills. Joe's device became known with-in the Video Coordinator community as the "Joe's-Pole". U.S. Sports Video, recognized for inventing the original sports end zone camera system, was contacted about developing a professional "Joe Pole" - and the SideWinder came to life.

Sidenote: While serving in Vietnam the founder of U.S. Sports Video, Mike Bokulich, served in Light Attack Squadron VA-212. The A4D Skyhawk carrier jet was the squadron plane and they carried SideWinder heat seeking missles on their wingtips - And that's how the SkyHawk and SideWinder endzone video systems came to football.

The SideWinder was introduced to the football world at the 2010 AFCA Orlando convention and was an instant hit. As Dan "Bad Rad" Radakovich, Father of Linebacker U and the famous Pittsburgh Steelers "Steel Curtain", stood in front of the new SideWinder, he said, "That's the best one-on-one training tool I have seen in my 50 years of coaching".

Since that time the SideWinder has been the professional portable endzone camera system of choice for hundreds of teams ranging from the NFL, D-1 to the smallest football and youth programs. The telescoping mast excursion, height, gyro-action movement, action monitor, remote operating features, dual channel controller, quick release platforms, 20-hour brick battery system, custom control harness and adjustable viewing angles are all very critical to the proper operation and effectiveness of the SideWinder. As with all of our exclusive end zone camera systems, others come following along with "knock-off" products, but without the same professional quality, construction or operating characteristics.

Arkansas, Auburn, Ball State, Colts, Eagles, Missouri, Minnesota, LSU, Tennessee, Oregon, Purdue, Kent State, South Carolina and hundreds of other programs have made the SideWinder their system of choice.

SIDEWINDER XL

Sidewinder "Stealth XL"

The new SideWinder "Stealth-XL" Series of endzone camera system is stealthy anodized in black with additional height options and upgraded to a larger HDMI action monitor - truly ready to zero in and capture all the sports video action from any place and from any angle.

The additional height of the SideWinder-XL, series of 2-Stage (13') and 3-Stage (18') SideWinder models allows both systems to be very effective for endzone video game action as well as practice situations. Coaches who have used the SideWinder over the past three years like the fact that during game action you can instantly move to always have a direct line on the quarterback - and move from endzone to endzone and even up and down the sideline for line of scrimmage shots.

HITS THE MARKET

The new SideWinder "Stealth-XL" Series of Professional Portable End Zone Camera Systems was introduced at AFCA Nashville, January 2013, and the first production models are now in full production. Darrell Hazell had found the SideWinder so effective at Kent State University that it was one of his first acquisitions for his new program at Purdue University. After seeing Auburn Universities SideWinder at the 2010 National Championship game in Arizona, Chip Kelly added two Sidewinders to his program at Oregon and has already added the SideWinder-XL to his new program at the Philadelphia Eagles.

Why do you use custom aluminum extensions for your end zone camera systems?

Our Telescoping Mast and Base Assemblies are professionally designed and custom-built to our exact specifications. Detailed precision CNC machining is needed to manufacture the many exclusive components used on our various end zone camera systems. High quality certified aircraft aluminum materials; automated extrusion presses and Kevlar handling systems provide an ideal environment to develop the precision aluminum extrusions used to manufacture the Eagle, SkyHawk, Raven, Hawkeye, and SideWinder end zone systems. Anodizing, powder coating, extreme-etch, plating, heat-treating, and mechanical finishing provide for a total hi-quality finished system. Each U.S. Sports Video Tripod Tower System goes through a rigorous phase of prototype evolution before going into final production and is field-tested to meet our demanding standards. Each system is tested for Strength, Wind-Load, Stability, Vibration, and Stiffness, system parameters, and qualities to maximize safety and ease of operation. Our proven "Lifetime Warranty" - No other end zone camera system on the market can make that claim or match our system structural integrity, safety, stability, and simplicity.

Who is Dr. John?

As Senior Product Engineer at U.S. Sports video, John was instrumental in the development of our exclusive line of end zone camera systems. Each system had to go through a rigorous phase of prototype evolution before he would approve it for final production. Dr. John often related to his NASA days in saying that the final "Lunar Module" was no resemblance to the first one that was put on the drawing board - All U.S. Sports Systems have to go through the same evolution and built for safety, stability, simplicity and operating convenience and to last a long time as if it were going to the moon.

John was a brilliant man who spent 13 years as an Aerospace Engineer in the Electromagnetic Propulsion Division of NASA's Lewis Research Center in Brook Park Ohio. John helped develop and test the electronic and propulsion systems that enabled America's lunar landing and the design of quieter jet engines for commercial airlines. He received a number of patents for his work and an Apollo Achievement Award from NASA. John left NASA to found and direct the Medical Data Systems Corporation, one of the first in the country to provide real-time, automated information systems for physicians' offices, hospitals, and clinics. During the 1970s, John served as a senior consultant for the design of the Great Lakes VHF Communications System.

John's "Labor of Love" later became President of the Cleveland Coordinating Committee for the U.S.S. Cod World War II Submarine. John will be forever missed by all who had the privilege to know and work with him.

What is your work experience?

With over 4800 systems installed throughout the world and a lifetime warranty on all of our tower systems, we will not let you down!  Arkansas, Auburn, Ball State, Colts, Cowboys, Dolphins, Eagles, Missouri, Minnesota, LSU, Tennessee, Oregon, Purdue, Kent State, South Carolina, and hundreds of other big and small programs provide a longtime proven track record for U.S. Sports Video systems.
